Red Hill – Renovation and Extension

We were invited to collaborate on this project by our long-term contacts at Built Smart, who had the most incredible ambition for this challenging site. Positioned on a steep slope at Red Hill, the narrow block offered plenty of challenges, but also the opportunity to work with the site to create a memorable experience in this home.

The main entry is down a side path and straight into a generous foyer at the centre of the house. This allows clear delineation to different zones within the home, as well as positioning the main circulation stair centrally. Moving from this central entry toward the back of the property is an elegant living area with views of the lush valley behind. Car accommodation and basement room are toward the front. Upstairs in the original house are children’s and guest bedrooms, at the back upper level, the Master Suite takes advantage of the outlook. Clustered around the stair core across the different levels are bathrooms, laundry, study and storage – making these functional spaces easily accessible from each zone of the house.

The level changes were softened with wide stairs, large landings, offsetting flights and elevated roof gardens – the function of the stair became one of the ways we elevated the experience of this home.
